When a man leaves military life and retires to the civilian life, many changes will take place that few civilians are aware of.   Many retired Vets know well what the new Vet is leaving behind.
The retired Vet knows well that after years of military camaraderie [a camaraderie that few people will ever experience outside the military life], the memories will remain as a longing for those past times.
The retired Vet knows that after active military life there is a fellowship which remains long after the uniforms are hung up in the back of the closet.
The retired Vet knows that the very bearing of any man speaks of what he was and in his heart still is.
The retired Vet will still look carefully at people because he has seen the best in his comrades and the worst in the visible and invisible enemy.
The retired Vet will see in others what is not obvious to the untrained eye.
The retired Vet will always look at the military world with respect and admiration for what they do, day in and day out, with little understanding from the folks back home.
The retired Vet is still a member of the greatest fraternity the world has ever known.
Now, to the newly retired Vet, here are a few words of wisdom as what to expect from your civilian friends, and then from your Veteran friends:
Civilian friends:  Get upset if you’re too busy to talk to them for a few days.
Veteran friends:  Are happy to see you long after years have passed and will gladly carry on the same conversations you were having the last time you met.
Civilian friends:  Have never seen you cry.
Veteran friends:  Have cried many times with you.
Civilian friends:  Keep your stuff so long, they forget it’s yours.
Veteran friends:  Borrow your stuff for a few days and give it back.
Civilian friends:  Know a few things about you.
Veteran friends:  Could write a book about you, including direct quotes remembered all the way from basic training to your many assignments throughout the world.
Civilian friends:  Will leave you behind if that’s what the crowd is doing.
Veteran friends:  Will kick the crowds’ ass that left you behind.
Civilian friends:  Are sometimes there only for a while.
Veteran friends:  Are there for you for a lifetime.
Civilian friends:  Have shared a few experiences with you.
Veteran friends:  Have shared a lifetime of experiences few civilians could imagine.
Civilian friends:  Will ignore this memo.
Veteran friends:  Will forward this on to their buddies.
Thank you, Veteran!  God Bless our United States Veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for America’s freedoms.
